Here's the honest picture, not the headline version.
The Bank of Canada held its overnight rate at 2.25% on July 15 — the sixth hold in a row. The economy's been soft but is showing signs of picking up, and inflation is expected to ease back toward 2% into next year. Translation: no new relief on borrowing costs yet, but nothing working against you either. The next announcement lands September 2.
Here's the part most headlines are missing: June's 3.9% year-over-year dip was actually the smallest decline in 15 months — and seasonally adjusted prices edged higher for the second month in a row. That's not a crash, that's a market catching its breath. Zoom out further and the 10-year average annual growth rate has slowed to 3.7%, well below the long-run historical average of 6% — which is usually a sign we're approaching a cyclical price bottom, not the start of a new slide.
